Religious Education Musings
by Rev. Ellie Duhamel, Director of Religious Education

February 2008

Sunday, January 20 was the twentieth Sunday in the 2007-2008 schedule of “regular” Sundays. That makes it the half-way point in the Church School year! It has been a grand year so far, and shows all signs of continuing as begun. All our classes are humming along nicely, thanks to all the parents who bring their children, despite the cold and the seductive powers on the young of video games and TV. And thanks to our teachers who come and work wonders on a regular basis, and to the marvelous RE Committee who work year-round for our children and their families, and to this welcoming congregation that provides a quilt of cosy belonging for our children to feel safe in.

During the last storm, I watched the snow coming down, one tiny flake at a time. For hours they fell, each little flake seemingly too small to matter at all, until, all togother, they transformed the whole landscape. Our lives are much like that. One at a time, each little word we say, or hear, each little act we do or that is done to us, while seemingly too small to matter at all, joins with all the others, and over time has the power to change the whole landscape. It matters how we treat each other; it matters how we live our lives. What we do and how we do it has great power. Blessed are the little people who get to grow up in an accepting and loving church.

February 10 will see the culmination of this year’s Special Friend’s program. It is always such a fun, if somewhat chaotic, day. All those people, big and small and in-between seeking and finding and enjoying each other; it’s way cool!

I wish you a happy February. What, with Valentine’s Day and the birthdays of two of our most amazing presidents and school vacations, it has the potential to be full of fun times. It seems as though, if we figure it right, there could be an excuse for a party every week!

Love,
